Romeu reflects on final day draw

Oriol Romeu says Southampton must learn lessons from their 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town heading into next season.

Nathan Redmond’s stunning strike had lit the blue touch paper for the perfect finale on the last day, but Alex Pritchard’s leveller secured a share of the spoils.

And while there are plenty of reasons to be excited, with the prospect of a full pre-season under Ralph Hasenhüttl lying in wait, Romeu says they must use their experiences during the campaign wisely.

“It’s been tough at times but we got what we wanted, we achieved what we wanted which is very good for us, although the last few games haven’t been good enough I would say.

“We’ve done a great job with the manager and we’re all very pleased with where we are right now.

“We didn’t get enough points in the last two or three games which isn’t something we wanted. We wanted to win as many points as possible to finish in a good way and we haven’t done it.

“It’s probably an example of how tough this league is and how demanding it will be next season. It’s something we have to do better and we’re ready to learn from this season so that it can’t happen again.

“We’re all very positive and we’ve seen this season we have a good and strong squad. We’ve seen some very good matches and played at a level we haven’t done for the last three years.

“We have to take that into next season and follow that more regularly and we’ll be in a very good position hopefully.”
